According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the vehicle population in India is growing at rate of over 5% per annum and currently it is approximately 40 million. The vehicle mix is also unique to India in that there is a very high proportion of two wheelers (76%). Alarming increase in road accidents (about 1,35,000 people die of road accidents in India), high cost of public road transportation solutions, pollution, vehicle operation cost, are some of the challenges that is facing the Indian road transport system.
